How does Harvard estimate its economic impact?
In "The Plan for Harvard in Allston" it says that "Harvard’s Allston Initiative is expected to generate approximately 14,000 to 15,000 jobs over the next 50 years."
That's an extraordinarily precise estimate in an otherwise very general document.
They know what facilities they plan on building, along with their operational time line and construction needs. This allows them to estimate, based on their current hiring and personnel needs for similar facilities what their hiring/attrition rate is. Take this information and extrapolate it over the 50 year period.
Thats pretty easy number to come up with.
