  1. Flaherty stopped by our house a couple of weeks ago. He had interesting things to say, so I emailed him some follow-up questions. This is what he said about Harvard in Allston:

"With respect to Harvard University, we need a State Senator who can negotiate through leverage. They can be a better partner with AB and can certainly do more to complete many of the unfinished work in your neighborhood such as the proposed Science Center. I have often wondered why no legislator has filed a bill to strip all of the universities, Harvard included, of their tax exempt status. I view these universities as operating in a highly competitive industry that doesn't have a lot in common with other non-profits. I would propose that Harvard and other universities begin paying excise tax immediately on their fleet of automobiles and that a real accounting of the PILOT program be conducted. If Harvard thought their tax liability would suddenly increase by 10s of millions, I am confident that they would participate in community affairs with a greater understanding of their responsibility to their neighbors in AB."

I thought it impressive that he's taking such a daring stance.
