Benefits for Allston | Opinion | The Harvard Crimson
"While education and entertainment are important, residents dealing with business closures, construction sites, and a rapidly changing neighborhood demographics deserve benefits related to housing, employment, and transportation....However, it would be a shame if Harvard simply used these millions to construct resources that were useful only to Harvard affiliates."

I wish the University corporates had a modicum of the Crimson's sensibility.

I'm glad the Crimson picked up on the impact Harvard expansion has on demographics. Diversity is really impacted when university expansion pushes older people and families out of a neighborhood. I can't imagine for example that the Samuels buildings will be very appealing to families since they will most likely be priced out of them.

Here's a nice, long reply to Anonymous who has so little strength of his opinions that he won't even identify himself. Well, he is ignorant and irritating. As a half-century Allston property owner and resident, I can tell you that Harvard is the best thing that has ever happened to this rather ugly and unproductive little neighborhood. The flight of families has been going on ever since they found out there are better places to raise a kid. Older folks tend to die in any community. Anyone who thinks Harvard is a problem is just plain nutz. You just can't create the future by clinging to the past. Change averse troglodytes like this person just don't get it. Old Allstonians have never even had the self-respect to stand up and say, "We're Allstonians, damn it!", much less improve their homes or their community. They always want someone else to take responsibility. We are Allstonians, damn it! There is no such place as Allston-Brighton any more than there is a place called Cambridge-Somerville! Allstonians have not done much to better the neighborhood or themselves. I swear most have never been to Harvard Square, much less afford themselves of the education offered there. They have been such poor stewards of the land that the City and the BRA had to bulldoze 52 squalid, decaying slum buildings colloquially known as Barry's Corner 45 years ago since the citizens themselves couldn't be bothered to repair and improve their homes. They still blame outside forces instead of looking in the mirror. Allston is getting a gift. There will be new people, probably young, educated, upscale professionals and members of the educational community. Who, in their right mind, would not want an influx of productive members of society like this? These folks will be light-years better than the old, complaining Allstonians who point the finger of blame at anyone but themselves. Now, Harvard is the "Great Satan"? To think that, you have to be mentally ill.

Hey Washington Allston, my brothers all went to Harvard. My niece goes to Harvard now. I guess they are pretty ignorant!! Seriously, a "gift", more like a trojan horse.
