Globe Watch visits Union Sq

Prompted by an email from a Brookline resident, the Globe comes to this busy Allston intersection and finds "all kinds of driving infractions, from drivers impatient to get moving zipping into the intersection and then stopping, thus blocking oncoming traffic, to others, as Roberts described, using a left turn only lane to cut ahead of cars queued up to go straight on to North Beacon Street."

The Boston Transportation Dept's response is that a "left turn only" sign will be posted 40 yards before the intersection and that a traffic camera may be installed to help adjust the timing of traffic lights.

Missing from the City's response is any suggestion of increased enforcement. Cambridge Police have been in Harvard Square recently giving warnings and/or citations to make Mass Ave safer for pedestrians. And I've seen police in Brookline on Harvard Ave trying to maintain some sense of order in Coolidge Corner. But I can't remember the last time I saw a Boston officer at one of Allston's several crazy intersections.

Personally, I'd rather seem them put up a barrier in the middle lane (with enough room to get cars over to the left), and make it only a place for the 57 to cross back over to the left turn lane and for the fire engines to leave the station.

Many people run red lights along Washington St. and it's quite scary. The police do nothing. Even MBTA buses are running light. Yeah, a left turn sign...

Does it take a fatality to get action?

The police would rather do detail in front of construction sites than protect its citizens.

  4. It is the police duty to give detail from construction areas and protect the citizens. In the Washington many people have red lights but police is silent. Nothing does anything against them.
